Rudrakshas An Introduction

The name Rudraksha is of sanskrit origin as the seed rudraksha was originated in the Indian sub continent , to be precise in the great Himalayas. The meaning of this sacred word is Eyes of rudra(Shiva). Rudra or Shiva is the omniscient lord of the Hindus representing the trinity and symbolises the quality 'destruction' for the purposes of recreation for the universe to carry on .





Aksha means the eyes and rudraksha means the eyes of Rudra that is considered so sacred and divine. The reason behind this seed being known in the name of lord's eye unfolds the story of its mythological origin. Rudraksha seed has been assigned very special place in hindu scriptures and it is a fact that the same is assigned with many a mystical and divine property. Rudraksh plant is known as 'ELAEOCARPUS GRANITRUS'. The Rudraksha tree is found in India , Bhutan , nepal and a few other Southn East Asian countries but not in Europe or USA.

One Faced Rudraksham (Rudraksha)



Rudraksha is known in India from time immemorial and there are divine references in many puraanaas(Sacred texts) and other scriptures. There are reliable references about Rudraksha in Shiva purana , Padma Puranas besides in Devi Bhagavatham. It is considered to ward off ill health, evil influence ,and grant lasting health and happiness to the wearer .


The selection of Rudraksha is of paramount importance as different types of Rudrakshas represent different planets and quality and have different action on the human body. Rudrakshas are of many kinds depending on their faces called Mukhis in sanskrit. Some of these Rudrakshas are rare where as some others are quite in abundance. The value of the Rudraksha also depends on its availabilty. It is stated that there are 38 types of Rudrakshas starting from the most sacred one mukhi to 38 Mukhis or faces.The faces are the deep lines that appear on the surface of this seed and one can easily find out the same.
